Lismore gardens: river flats, red hills and hot summers
Lismore is two sorts of ground: deep, rich river soil on the flats along the Wilsons, and free-draining red basalt soil up at Goonellabah, Lismore Heights and East Lismore. Both grow nearly anything, which is why older gardens here carry mature citrus, frangipanis and big shade trees.
Summer is the test. Lismore runs hotter than the coast, and the rain comes in short, heavy bursts. Mulch here has to hold moisture through the heat and stay put when a storm hits.
Plenty of gardens on the flats have been rebuilt since the 2022 flood, and bare new topsoil crusts over and grows weeds within a week. A good mulch layer shields it from storm rain and holds moisture while young plants settle in.

Measure your beds in square metres and work from 75mm deep. One cubic metre covers 13.3 square metres at 75mm, so a 40 square metre garden needs about 3 cubic metres. Keep a 10 to 15cm gap around every stem and trunk.
