Tea tree mulch and termites: what the research really shows
You'll hear that tea tree mulch repels termites. There's one real study behind the claim, and it's good news for us, but it's not the whole story. Here's what it found in plain English, plus the simple rules that actually protect your house.
In the only proper study, termites at a US university refused to eat melaleuca mulch, ate every other mulch tested, and most of them died on it. That's a great result, but no mulch is a termite barrier. Keep any mulch clear of your walls and keep up your annual inspection.
Does tea tree mulch repel termites?
Repel is a big word. The study showed termites wouldn't eat melaleuca mulch and most died on it, which is resistance, not a force field. Our mulch is Melaleuca alternifolia, a close cousin of the tree tested, so the result is relevant but we won't call it proof.
Does mulch attract termites?
Mulch doesn't create termites. They're already in the ground, looking for moisture, cover and a hidden path to your timber. Mulch out in the garden beds is fine. Mulch heaped against the house holds damp and hides the slab edge, which is exactly where your inspector needs to look.
How should you lay mulch near a house?
The same rules protect your house whatever mulch you buy, and none of them cost a cent.
- Leave the first metre beside the house as gravel, crushed rock or bare ground.
- Keep the slab edge, bottom bricks and weep holes visible for your inspector.
- Spread 75mm deep in the beds. One cubic metre covers 13.3 square metres.
- Fix dripping taps and blocked downpipes, because damp invites termites more than any mulch does.

Should you buy tea tree mulch because of termites?
