Ballina soils, salt and what grows here
Ballina soil changes fast. Near the beach at East Ballina and Skennars Head it's sand: quick to dry and hungry. The river flats are heavier cane country, and up toward Teven and Tintenbar the ground is richer again.
Salt wind off Lighthouse Beach and Shelly Beach burns soft plants, so coastal gardens here lean on tough natives: banksias, westringias, lomandras. They like lean soil, which suits our mulch perfectly. In the new estates the topsoil is thin, so mulch does real work from day one.
Why tea tree mulch suits Ballina
Our mulch is fine fibred, and those fibres knit into a mat that stays put through onshore wind and heavy summer rain, where bark and sugar cane tend to lift and float. Put it down at 75mm and it lasts 12 to 18 months. 1 cubic metre covers 13.3 square metres at 75mm.
On sandy soil the mat keeps water in the root zone between waterings. It's chemical free with no dyes, sits at pH 6.0 to 6.6, and is low in nutrients, just what banksias and grevilleas want. Keep a 10 to 15cm gap around stems and trunks.

Yes, and they're some of our shortest runs, just above our valley. The tipper handles new-estate driveways fine. Mention tight corners or retaining walls when you call 0402 294 776 and we'll pick the best spot to tip.
How much mulch do I need for a typical Ballina garden?
Work at 75mm deep. 1 cubic metre covers 13.3 square metres, so a block with 40 square metres of beds needs about 3 cubic metres. Measure your beds, or just call and we'll work it out with you.
Will tea tree mulch stay put in the salt wind at East Ballina?
Yes, that's its strength. The fine fibres knit into a mat that holds through wind and heavy rain, where sugar cane lifts and scatters. Lay it 75mm deep, 100mm at most, with a 10 to 15cm gap around stems.
