How much mulch do you need?

Add up your garden beds below and get the answer in cubic metres, rounded to a load you can actually order. One cubic metre covers 13.3 square metres at the 75mm depth we recommend.

The maths, if you would rather do it yourself

Multiply each bed's length by its width in metres to get square metres, then multiply by depth in metres. A 10m by 2m bed at 75mm is 10 × 2 × 0.075, which is 1.5 cubic metres.

Measuring odd shaped beds

Break curved beds into rough rectangles and triangles, measure each, and add them up. Halve a triangle's length times width. For a circular bed, multiply the radius by itself, then by 3.14. Close enough is genuinely close enough: mulch forgives estimation better than concrete does.

50mm 1m³ covers 20 m² Top ups over last year's layer
100mm 1m³ covers 10 m² Paths and heavy weeds, the maximum
FAQ

Quantity questions

How much mulch do I need per square metre?

At the recommended 75mm depth you need 0.075 cubic metres per square metre. Put another way, one cubic metre covers 13.3 square metres at 75mm, 20 square metres at 50mm, or 10 square metres at 100mm.

How many wheelbarrows are in a cubic metre of mulch?

A standard garden wheelbarrow holds about 0.1 cubic metres, so one cubic metre is roughly 10 barrow loads. A 4 cubic metre delivery is about 40 barrow trips, which is worth knowing before you plan an afternoon.

How deep should mulch be?

We recommend 75mm for garden beds. Use 50mm when topping up over an existing layer, and never go past 100mm: too deep and fine mulch can start shedding rain instead of soaking it through to the soil.

Should I order a bit extra?

Round up rather than down. Beds are rarely perfect rectangles, and a little extra covers settling and the odd bare patch. When you call we will help you settle on a sensible load size for your garden and town.
