Bangalow is about 25 minutes from our farm at Teven, up the Hinterland Way through Newrybar or straight up the motorway. It's a quick, familiar run for our tipper.
This is old dairy country on red basalt, and the village is built on hills. Terraced beds, heritage timber homes, big figs and camphor laurels. Even the Bangalow palm takes its name from here.
Soil, slope and shade in Bangalow
That red basalt soil is rich and holds together well, but on a slope a bare bed loses topsoil every time a summer storm hits. A good mulch layer stops that.
Many gardens here are mature too. Big figs and camphor laurels throw heavy shade, and their surface roots drink up moisture, so beds under old trees dry out fast. Tea tree mulch holds that moisture in, and with no dyes it weathers to a natural brown that suits an older garden.
Why tea tree mulch suits Bangalow
Slope is the big one. The fine fibres knit into a mat within a few weeks, and that mat stays put on a hill through heavy rain. Sugar cane blows off a slope and bark floats and rolls. Tea tree holds.
It's chemical free, lasts 12 to 18 months, and stops weeds by blocking light at 75mm deep. The pH sits between 6.0 and 6.6, which suits natives and established trees. Keep it under 100mm, don't dig it in, and leave a 10 to 15cm gap around stems and trunks.

Bangalow delivery questions
Do you deliver tea tree mulch to Newrybar, Coorabell and Possum Creek?
Yes. Bangalow runs take in Newrybar, Possum Creek, Coorabell, Binna Burra and Fernleigh. If you're on a rural lane, mention it when you call 0402 294 776 and we'll make sure the truck can get in first.
Will mulch wash downhill on a sloping Bangalow block?
Loose mulch can. Tea tree's fine fibres knit into a mat within a few weeks, and that mat hangs on through wind and heavy rain. Lay it at 75mm, water it in, and it'll hold through storm season.
How much mulch do I need for a typical Bangalow garden?
Divide your bed area by 13.3. One cubic metre covers 13.3 square metres at the recommended 75mm depth, 20 square metres at 50mm, or 10 at 100mm. A 40 square metre terraced front garden needs about 3 cubic metres.
How much does tea tree mulch delivery to Bangalow cost?
It depends on load size and where you are, so we quote by phone. Call 0402 294 776, seven days from 8:30am to 5pm, with a rough area in square metres and your street, and we'll give you a straight price.
