What are Byron Bay soils and growing conditions like?
Byron has two growing zones. Near the beaches you're on pale sand that drains fast and dries out as soon as the sun comes back. At Ewingsdale, Myocum and Coorabell the soil turns red and volcanic, richer but often on a slope. Both cop heavy summer rain and salt wind.
This coast can get more than 1,700mm of rain a year, and a summer storm can drop a month's worth in an afternoon. Light mulches shift around in that. Banksias and grevilleas do well on the sand here too, and they like a mulch low in phosphorus. Ours is.
Why tea tree mulch suits Byron Bay
Our mulch is fine tea tree leaf and twig that knits into a mat within a few weeks. It stays put through onshore wind and burst rain that would lift sugar cane off a sandy bed, and it slows the surface drying coastal gardens fight all summer.
It lasts 12 to 18 months, so one top up a year keeps a garden tidy. It's chemical free, no dyes, with a pH of 6.0 to 6.6 and low phosphorus, which suits the natives. Put it down 75mm deep, never past 100mm, and leave a 10 to 15cm gap around stems and trunks.

How much mulch do I need for a typical Byron Bay garden?
Add up the square metres of your beds. One cubic metre covers 13.3 square metres at 75mm deep, which is what we recommend, especially on sand. Don't go past 100mm, and keep a 10 to 15cm gap around stems and trunks.
