Our farm is in the Teven valley, 15 minutes from Lennox Head: out through Tintenbar, along Ross Lane and down the hill into the village. We grow the tea tree, cut it, mulch it and deliver it ourselves. No middle yard, no bought-in product.
Lennox knows tea tree already. The paperbarks that tint Lake Ainsworth dark are cousins of the tea tree we grow, and the same family makes a fine, fibrous mulch that holds through salt wind. It's made for sandy Lennox gardens.
Sand, salt and sea wind: gardening at Lennox Head
Most of Lennox sits on sand that drains fast. A bed can be dry again two days after rain. A 75mm layer of mulch slows that right down, and as it breaks down it helps the sand hold water.
The other constant is wind. Summer nor'easters come off Seven Mile Beach carrying salt, and gardens near Pat Morton Lookout cop the southerlies too. So Lennox plants what handles it: coast banksia, westringia, lomandra and pandanus. Tea tree mulch suits the lot, from cottage beds behind Ballina Street to the native plantings up on the hill.
Why tea tree mulch suits Lennox Head
Salt wind is the test most mulches fail here. Sugar cane is light and hollow, and a strong onshore blow can spread it down the street. Tea tree mulch is fine and fibrous. In a few weeks it knits into a mat that stays put through wind and rain, then holds its cover for 12 to 18 months.
It suits what Lennox plants, too. It's low in nutrients, just right for phosphorus-sensitive natives like banksias and grevilleas, and sits at a pH of 6.0 to 6.6. No chemicals, no dyes. Just keep a 10 to 15cm gap around every stem.

How much mulch do I need for a typical Lennox Head garden?
Measure your beds in square metres and divide by 13.3. One cubic metre covers 13.3 square metres at the recommended 75mm depth, so 25 square metres needs about 2 cubic metres. Don't lay it deeper than 100mm.
Will tea tree mulch blow away in the sea breeze at Lennox?
No. The fine fibres knit into a mat within a few weeks, and that mat stays put through onshore wind and heavy rain. That's the main reason coastal gardeners switch from sugar cane, which blows off an exposed bed.
